Wedding Day Speeches – Tips For Success

On your big day, the wedding day speeches are a big deal for many people. Public speaking is the number one fear in America, being feared even more than dying! Most people are really not comfortable talking in front of an audience and when you throw in to the mix alcohol, the stress and worry of the day plus the fact the audience is composed of friends and family you have a recipe for disaster.

At the end of the day you want your wedding day speeches to go without a hitch and to be enjoyable, humorous and moving all at the same time. Unless you are a professional speaker this is a tall order!

If you are committed to avoiding the um’s and ar’s that invariably appear in a wedding speech then you need to take some action and prepare in advance of the wedding day.

Start by writing out the main points you want to cover in your speech on a piece of paper. Make sure you are aware of your role within the wedding and who you have to thank, say looks beautiful and so on within your speech. If you have to give a toast at the end of your speech, make sure you are aware of that too.

Don’t try and write your speech out word for word because you are going to struggle if you do so. It is better to have the main points written down and then practise each section until you can talk about it without hesitating or stopping. Trying to memorize an entire speech can be a problem, particularly if you’ve had a drink or two at the wedding.

Practise your speech every single day. Practise it in your car on the way to work. Practise it at lunch time. Pick a section of your speech at a time and practise it until you are happy with the content and then move on to the next one.

Once you are happy with each section then you need to start to put it together. Practise your speech then all the way through from start to finish. You will find as you do this you refine your speech even more.

Be aware though of the length of your speech. Speaking for more than 3 to 5 minutes at a wedding is going to induce boredom in your audience. Don’t waffle on, keep to the point.

When you are practising your speech, practise it out loud so you can listen to the tonality of your voice. Once you are practising your entire speech you may want to engage an audience (an impartial one who won’t give the contents of your speech away to the wedding party) to listen to you deliver your speech and give feedback.

This is beneficial because something that sounds good to your ears may not sound as good to a listener. It will also give you chance to practise in front of an audience, which can only help you.

Practising your speech like this will ensure that when the dig day comes, your wedding day speech is well received and enjoyed. Remember to take your notes along with you to the wedding though – they can act as prompts for you. However, if you’ve practised enough you won’t need them, but they are a useful safety net.
